Bacteriostatic vs sterile water
Bacteriostatic water – often shortened to bac water – is sterile water with 0.9% benzyl alcohol added as a preservative. Benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of bacteria that may enter the vial, so a multi-use vial can be punctured several times. In the lab, bacteriostatic water 0.9% benzyl alcohol is mainly used to reconstitute lyophilised research peptides and to dilute solutions.
The preservative is what makes bacteriostatic water practical: one vial can serve several withdrawals, for example when you reconstitute several research peptides or prepare a solution in steps. For applications in which benzyl alcohol is undesirable – because a compound or an assay is sensitive to it – sterile water without additives is the better choice. For that, see our Sterile Water 2mL – Box of 10 Ampoules.
Store unopened vials at room temperature, protected from light. Write the date on the label at the first puncture: it is common practice to discard a vial 28 days after it was first punctured. Disinfect the rubber stopper before every withdrawal.
Want to buy bacteriostatic water? Our Bacteriostatic Water 10mL comes in a 10 mL multi-use vial and is intended for laboratory research use only – not for human or veterinary use.
Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, so a vial can be punctured repeatedly. Sterile water contains no preservative and is meant for single use: open, use and discard the rest.
The usual rule is to discard a vial 28 days after the first puncture. Note the date on the vial so you know when the period ends.
At room temperature and away from light, both before and after opening. After the first puncture, the 28-day rule applies.
No. It is a laboratory supply for reconstituting and diluting research compounds, for research use only – not for human or veterinary use.
